In the play Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both suffer due to their guilt of murdering King Duncan and other characters such as Banquo and his family. Macbeth, in particular, sees the ghost of Banquo due to the insanity that is caused by his guilt. Lady Macbeth, also agonizes in great guilt after killing King Duncan. She sees blood on her hands that never washes off. She continuously rubs her hand to get rid of the blood and she mumbles while sleepwalking. In today's society, there are lots of crimes that are being committed and hundreds of people die because of such crimes. A very good example is the story of a woman who planned on a murder-suicide with her husband. Gauthier planned to kill her children and commit suicide with her husband; however, she ended up surviving. According to a psychiatrist, she is feeling extreme guilt to what she had done. First of all, the fact that Macbeth and Gauthier committed a serious crime by killing someone is a big similarity between the two. It seems to me that even if the person purposely enacted a crime, he or she seems to have some sort of a regret or guilt. Macbeth, when he first killed King Duncan, had remorse of the act and so did Gauthier. Macbeth, at last, was killed by Macduff and lost his title of the King. Similarly, Gauthier was eventually accused of murder and lost her family and herself. It all comes to a conclusion that whenever a person commits an atrocity, there is always a consequence followed by it no matter what. Moreover, Lady Macbeth starts to sleepwalk and rub her hand while sleepwalking. Similarly, Gauthier, although she did not sleepwalk, dreamed about the crime she had committed and suffered in great guilt as well. Lady Macbeth commits suicide and Gauthier tries to commit suicide, not being able to overcome her guilt. In short, the characters in the play Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and Gauthier in real life, share lots in common. They all committed extreme crimes and eventually suffered in great guilt.
