Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are two main characters that clearly demonstrates the theme of guilt. First of all, Macbeth was a brave and courageous man in the beginning of the play. I believe that his character change from a chivalrous soldier to a vicious murderer is mostly associated with Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth instigated Macbeth making him to be more desirous. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth's stinging rebuke to Macbeth to become more manly made him want to prove his "ability" and "power". There are many evidences in the play that shows guilt; Macbeth regretting what he had done. One of the very important scene is where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo at the Banquet. Despite the fact that people are watching him, Macbeth is not able to control his consciousness. This particular scene definitely depicts Macbeth dealing with his guiltiness. supports the idea of Macbeth having guilt. However, I think that the situation is different for Lady Macbeth. Although she continuously rubs her hand to get rid of the blood that she sees and murmurs while sleepwalking, she doesn't seem to know the what she had done wrong. Lady Macbeth never seemed to recognize her guilt about what she had done because the play never shows any parts where she is regretting the crimes she had committed. Although she seems to suffer, I believe that she is not recognizing the feeling as guilt. Lady Macbeth's greed never stopped and consistently sought for something greater even if it is an immoral thing to do, such as encouraging her husband to murder someone.
